A friend asked me this question this morning.
You saw a shirt for $97.
You didn't have that cash.
So you borrowed $50 from your Mom and $50 from your Dad.
You bought the shirt, and had $3 change.
You returned $1 to your Mom and $1 to your Dad.
And kept the other $1 for yourself.
Now you owe your Mom $49 and your Dad $49.
$49 + $49 = $98 + your $1 = $99.
WHERE IS THE MISSING $1?
Now, majority of people will start calculating in this manner:
$50 from Mom + $50 from Dad = $100
$100 - $97 = $3
$1 back to Mom and $1 back to Dad, $3 - $2 = $1
Amount owe for each parent: ($50 - $1 = $49) x 2 = $98
$98 + the left over $1 = $99
The next thing you know, you screamed: WHY?!
In this case, you cannot look at it this way.
The $1 you kept for yourself, treat it as two 50cents.
So there isn't a missing $1 to start off with!
Because $3 divide by 2 = $1.50.
Returned your Mom $1.50 and Dad $1.50.
You would owe them $48.50 each.
$48.5 x 2 = $97.
$97 + $3 change = $100!
Sometimes when you feel that life keeps going against you, think about how you can view the situation in a different way. One of the biggest lessons we can learn in life is how to see things from a different point of view.
The ability to see things from a different perspective is a gift in all areas of your life because it requires a certain amount of humility and a willingness to surrender. You have to be willing to believe that anything is possible.
Taking relationships as an example. When you are willing to allow a different point of view to exist, listening happens and disagreements are less. You will find that your relationships are more joyous and people find great ease in being with you. There is no battle. There is less to defend. People feel heard and safe in knowing that their thoughts and ideas are respected.
The ability to see a different point of view requires you give up the “being right” attitude. If you dare to believe that you could be wrong, even if you would swear you heard or saw something a particular way, definitely there would be more harmony with the people around you.
On your way to practicing seeing things from a different perspective, try speaking less and listening more. Be more observant and think of all the possibility of a situation. No one said it would be easy, to be honest it is difficult, even when your gut says otherwise.
`If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it.
